<p style="text-align: justify;">Jürgen Klopp’s appoitment as Liverpool FC’s new manager may not be “<a href="http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2015/oct/09/jurgen-klopp-arsene-wenger-liverpool-arsenal" target="_blank">the most exciting event … ever</a>,” but it is certainly terribly exciting. I have been a Liverpool supporter ever since my youth, when, not having a TV, I started looking for soccer clips online and found <em>Timbo’s Goals</em>, a now long defunct LFC fan site that featured clips from the glory days of the 70s and 80s, as well as the most recent games. The clips took ages to download on our dial-up connection, but it was worth it. From Keagan and Toshak to Kenny Daglish to John Barnes and Peter Beardsley to Robbie Fowler and Steve Mcmanaman, I got to know all the greats. Gérard Houllier was Liverpool manager in those days, and the first stomach-turningly exciting moment that I had as a Liverpool supporter was watching Houlier’s team defeat Deportivo Alavés in the 2001 UEFA Cup final (on a TV at the house of philosopher Peter Colosi).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Watching Jürgen Klopp’s <a href="https://youtu.be/pV_cRk9YPpA" target="_blank">presentation</a>  was a little bit like watching clips of Pope St. John Paul II emerging on the loggia of St Peter’s after his election to the papacy. The comparison might seem not only to be in bad taste, but also to be misleading. “A pope’s rôle in the Church is not much like that of a manager in a football club,” my readers are presumably thinking. A lot has been written recently in the sort of Catholic blogs that I read— especially ones that to some degree share my <a href="https://sancrucensis.wordpress.com/2014/01/16/integralism/" target="_blank">integralism</a>— about what popes are <em>not. </em>The pope is not a Soviet style dictator, or oriental tyrant who’s slightest whim is law. He is not the incarnation of the Holy Spirit delivering new revelations and so and so forth. Such warnings against exaggerated notions of the Pope’s rôle are all very well as far as they go.  The Holy Father is the servant of the truth, not its creator. And the pope’s very importance as Vicar of Christ on earth can easily lead to exaggerated ideas about his power. As one of the best of the recent treatments of what the pope is not, <a href="http://paraphasic.blogspot.co.at/p/a-critique-of-contemporary.html" target="_blank">Elliot Milco’s series against certain forms of excessive ultra-montanism</a>, puts it:<span id="more-3997"></span></p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Because the pope is a symbol of the unity of the faithful and possesses, by virtue of his universal jurisdiction and care of souls, a paternity with respect to all Christians, certain mistakes are easy to make.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This is of course true. I think it very important to spell out exactly what our duties toward the Holy Father are, and exactly what his universal jurisdiction entails, and under exactly what conditions his teaching on faith and morals is infallible. Certainly, there is a danger of an exaggerated maximalism extending his rôle beyond its proper limits, but of course there is also a danger of an exaggerated minimalism. Witness the theologians who claim that questions that popes have clearly wished to settle in teaching directed to the universal Church (eg. Bl. Paul VI’s teaching on the immorality of contraception in <em>Humanæ Vitæ, </em>or St. John Paul II’s teaching on the impossibility of the ordination of women in <em>Ordinatio Sacerdotalis</em>) are not in fact infallible.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However understandable though, I find something sad about the fact in the vociferous anti-ultramontanism of Catholics with integralist tendencies today. Originally, integralism was a part of the ultramontane movement— as C. van der Krogt points out in <a href="https://www.academia.edu/2180817/Catholic_Fundamentalism_or_Catholic_Integralism" target="_blank">a highly informative paper</a>, the name seems actually to have been invented for a Spanish party that defended Bl. Pius IX Syllabus. And integralism reached what van der Krogt calls its “classical form” in the reign of Pope St. Pius X among those Catholics who supported the saintly pontiffs anti-modernism. Naturally such integralists had strong views of papal authority. Nevertheless, there had been signs even in the pontificate preceding Pius X’s that integralism might also go a more Gallican route. French integralists had been opposed to Pope Leo XIII’s policy of <em><a href="http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-ralliement-of-leo-xiii-pastoral.html" target="_blank">ralliement</a></em> (in fact, continental integralists are <a href="http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-ralliement-of-leo-xiii-pastoral.html" target="_blank">still angry about <em>ralliement</em> today</a>). Later Pius XI’s condemnation of <em>Action Française </em>angered many French integralists, and famously lead to Cardinal Billot resigning his cardinalate.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">But the real test for the synthesis of integralism and ultra-montanism came with Vatican II. Vatican II apparent abandonment of the key integralist theses on the relation of Church and state, seemed to force integralist ultramontanes to choose between their integralism and their ultramontanism. Most abandoned or moderated their integralism, but some went the other way. Archbishop Lefebvre went into a strange sort of opposition to the policies of the Holy See. His roots in ultramontanism were too strong for him to adopt a fully Gallican position, however— hence his invention of the nonsense distinction between “eternal Rome” and “neo-Modernist Rome.”</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As for me, I have long held that one can be a true integralist without rejecting Vatican II or the teachings of the post-conciliar popes. In <a href="https://www.scribd.com/doc/32460739/Monarchy-Bachelor-Thesis-2006" target="_blank">my undergraduate thesis</a>, I argued that the most important teachings of Vatican II—especially its teachings on theological anthropology— actually support a form of integralism. One can be an integralist without being a “traditionalist.” This might seem like special pleading, but I think that it is actually true. I admit though, that it was easier to argue for my position in the last pontificate, with all the talk of reading Vatican II with a “hermeneutic of continuity in reform,” than it is in the current pontificate.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Pope Francis’s pontificate has caused a good deal of anti-ultramontane rhetoric among all sorts of “conservative” Catholics, but especially among integralists (few as they are). In a rather <a href="http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2015/07/exclusive-for-rorate-michael-davies.html" target="_blank">extraordinary lecture</a> Prof. de Mattei, one of the most distinguished of contemporary integralist thinkers, admits that while he would have been in the ultramontane party if he had lived at the time of Pius IX, he finds anti-ultramontane thinkers such as Bl. John Henry Newman more helpful for current circumstances:</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US">[W]e should study well, as M. Davies did, the limits of obedience to the Pope and the “fluid” Magisterium he offers daily, holding dearly, on this issue, to the teaching of the great English Cardinal, J.H. Newman, whom M. Davies admired as he did Cardinal Manning</span><span lang="EN-US">. I know he was the object of criticism for his admiration of Newman, considered a liberal by some traditionalists.  Newman’s anti-liberal orthodoxy was, however, confirmed not only by Leo XIII, who made him a cardinal, but also by St. Pius X in his papal brief to the Bishop of Limerick of March 10<sup>th</sup> 1908. <strong>As far as I’m concerned, I can say that if I had lived at the time of the First Vatican Council, I would have been with Manning, against Newman.  But since I live in the times of Vatican II, I think that Cardinal Newman, in his works, most of all the one dedicated to the Arians of the IV century, offer us better arms than Manning’s to combat the Modernists</strong> who have taken over the running  of the Church.</span></p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Now, I am of course a great admirer of Newman, and think that despite his anti-ultramontanism his piety toward the Holy See was irreproachable (see: <a href="https://sancrucensis.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/blessed-john-henry-newman-on-our-obligations-to-the-holy-see/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="https://sancrucensis.wordpress.com/2013/02/24/not-a-shadow-of-misgiving/" target="_blank">here</a>). Nevertheless, and even though some of the arguments made are quite sound, I find the current anti-ultramonatism sad. One reason that I think it sad is that in the history of the Church the greatest revivals of Catholic life have nearly always been brought about by movements who allied themselves closely with the Holy See, and saw themselves as carrying out a program proposed by the Supreme Pontiff. Thus the monks of Cluny obtained exemption from local episcopal jurisdiction, and tried to carry out the reforms of the great popes of the high Middle Ages— especially Pope St. Gregory VII. Similarly the Cistercians and the Norbertines devoted themselves to supporting the reforms of Gregory’s successors. Later still St. Dominic accepted his mission of preaching against the Albigensians  from the Holy Father. In the Counter-Reformation, St. Ignatius put all the energy of his movement at the immediate disposal of the Holy See through the so-called “fourth vow.” And after the disaster of the French Revolution, it was the ultramontane movement— a genuinely popular movement— that brought the revival of Catholic life in the 19th century. Vatican II apparently ended the ultramontane movement, but in the pontificate of Pope John Paul II many of the movements (<em>movimenti</em>) that attracted the most conversions and vocations had a sort of neo-ultramontane devotion to Pope John Paul II.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Of course, <a href="https://sancrucensis.wordpress.com/2010/11/27/all-times-are-bad-times/" target="_blank">all times are bad times</a>, and the Church <a href="https://sancrucensis.wordpress.com/2013/08/03/all-times-are-bad-times-ii/" target="_blank">has always been in badly in need of reform</a>. But there have been periods when there was a clear <em>elan</em> toward renewal, and other periods when decline seemed quicker and the reform movements counter-productive. And in part the difference depends on the extent to which the Roman Pontiffs have devoted themselves to true reform. Through his infallibility in matters of faith and morals the Pope is a break on the corruption of the faith, whatever his personal strengths and weaknesses, nevertheless a great deal does nevertheless depend on his giving a clear direction to those who love justice and hate iniquity. To <a href="https://books.google.at/books?id=qi34aF7LO-wC&lpg=PP1&dq=ian%20ker%20newman&pg=PA601#v=onepage&q=militant%20despotic&f=false" target="_blank">quote Bl. Cardinal Newman</a>: “the Church is a Church Militant, and, as the commander of an army must be despotic, so must the visible head of the Church be…” Popes who have energetically defended the Faith handed down from the Apostles and shown zeal for the correction of morals have always found movements willing to help them. But when the Renaissance popes neglected spiritual matters to worry about temporal things, the Protestant Reformation happened.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Thus in a way the pope really is like a football manager with the Church Militant as his team. If Jürgen Klopp is like Pope St. John Paul II, to whom can one compare Pope Francis? I’m afraid the comparison that occurs most readily to me is Roy Hodgson. Hodgson, like Pope Francis is a likable old man. And like Pope Francis he can talk eloquently and insightfully on certain subjects— listen to Hodgson on the virtues of 4-4-2, or to Pope Francis on the evils of technocratic capitalism. But I’m afraid that I must admit that like Hodgson at Liverpool, Pope Francis is some ways not very suited to his job. Just as Hodgson was liked by non-Liverpool supporting experts such as Philippe Auclair, was too reverential to anti-Liverpool figures such as Sir Alex Ferguson, gave playing time to unworthy players such as Paul Konchesky, and consequently angered the most fervent Liverpool supporters. Just so, Pope Francis is well liked by non-Catholics, is friendly toward the likes of Leonardo Boff, and gives encouragement to the likes of Cardinal Kasper. Thus, while I love Pope Francis with filial piety and am eager to learn from him and “be challenged by him” (as the children and journalists say nowadays), nevertheless I think it not inconsistent with filial piety to join in the plea of <em><a href="https://sancrucensis.wordpress.com/2015/07/11/catholic-social-teaching-on-lake-garda/" target="_blank">The Lake Garda Statement</a></em>:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">[W]e beseech the Roman Pontiff to fulfill his duty as Vicar of Christ and Universal Shepherd by leading the way to a restoration of the continuity between the Church’s venerable teaching on the Social Kingship of Christ—never repealed—and the practice of churchmen both high and low.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The comparison of Roy Hodgson to Pope Francis, and of Jürgen Klopp to St. John Paul, naturally leads to think of which other popes could be compared to which other LFC managers. The cerebral Rafael Benítez is clearly Pope Benedict XVI, and the majestic Kenny Dalglish is Pius XII. But who is Brendan Rodgers? Strange as it might seem, I would compare him to Bl. Paul VI. Rodgers came in as a sort of progressive, young, but highly qualified manager, who knew Spanish and could talk about tiki-taka and the possession game, and at first caused a lot of enthusiasm, but ended with the whole club in a sort of depression. In a similar way, Bl. Paul VI was elected to the See of Peter as a sort of progressive, young, but highly qualified prelate, who read cool theologians like de Lubac and Guardini and had edgy artistic taste. <p>I went into the course with a great deal of fear and dread. How can I trust my work, which proceeds from a solid Christian worldview, to those who have little or no grounding in Christianity? How do I trust that what I write will even speak to those whose initial points of reference are so antithetical to mine? For some time, anxiety has buzzed just below the surface: What is God expecting of me? How can I possibly deliver? Won’t this be like university where I had to find ways to write about faith without mentioning any actual experience of faith?</p>
<p>I find God is only expecting me to do my best. Thus far, the instructors, mentors, and other writers perceive my work not as religious but as writing. Some may get it, others not. But they respond to well-written characters and situations. Two weeks in and I’ve already discovered that I can express a character’s anxiety or joy or anger without using adverbs (anxiously) or telegraphing action (she felt joy rise within her and said…) or being the narrative voice that explains what the characters are doing (“I hate you!,” she screamed in anger.) What matters is that I can trust God even when He sends me into hostile territory.</p>

<p>Early in his episcopate, Cincinnati archbishop Dennis Schnurr confronted Xavier University president Michael Graham, S.J., about the many troubling things taking place on campus, even going so far as to issue an ultimatum. <p>The good folks at the <a href="http://catholiceducation.org/">Catholic Education Resource Center</a> <a href="https://youtu.be/CmKeFjdegRU">post a 2013 video</a> about Rome’s St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of the <a href="https://youtu.be/vcyWR1jKBw8">four Patriarchal/Major Basilicas</a>, with commentary from Church historian Elizabeth Lev.  One of the highlights of my 2014 trip to Rome with my oldest son, Benedict, was visiting these basilicas.  If memory serves, we hit St. Paul’s late in the day Sunday for Mass and confession.  I remember Ben wanting to take advantage of an indulgence.  We’ll visit them again next fall (’16) when we take the whole family.</p>

<p>I serendipitously happened to read this passage from H.V. Morton’s <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Traveller-Rome-H-V-Morton-ebook/dp/B009SAV05C/">A Traveller in Rome</a></em> this week on the eve of St. John Leonardi’s feast day:</p>
<blockquote><p>Upon a table in the library I saw an exquisite little birdcage made of silver and gilded wood in the form of a baroque shrine. It is one of the dove cages used in 1935 at the canonization of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More. It took me back to the scene in St. Peter’s about twenty years ago, when Andrea Bobola, John Leonardi, and Salvatore da Horta were canonized. During the Mass of Canonization, I heard the sound of birds chirping, and the cooing of doves, and saw a procession of monks and men in black court dress walk up the nave of St. Peter’s carrying little gilded cages, also small silver and gold barrels of wine and loaves of bread on a golden tray. There was silence in the church except for the cooing of the doves, as the Postulants, or advocates for the new saints, knelt before the Pope’s chair and made their offerings. Three times the cages full of bright chirpings were held up to the Pope, once for each of the three new saints, and the Pope leaned forward and blessed the birds as they put their heads on one side and gazed up into the blaze of light. <p>I read a <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3262034/Taylor-Clifford-28-tragically-lost-sister-Courtney-Harris-depression-revealed-flaws-country-s-mental-health-sector.html">piece</a> in the <i>Daily Mail</i> about a talented young woman who took her own life despite the best efforts of her family to help her. A very sad story which I wouldn't normally comment on here, except that the statistics at the end caught my attention, namely that in Australia over 2500 people commit suicide each year and over 60,000 make an attempt.<br /><br /> This reminded me of my recent <a href="http://ozconservative.blogspot.com.au/2015/09/the-biggest-threat-to-your-daughter.html">post</a> on domestic violence in which a mother of daughters claimed that "I worry about the most lethal and emotionally devastating threat to each of my girls — being in a relationship."<br /><br /> The mother was claiming that being in a relationship would expose her daughters to the lethal threat of domestic violence. She used the oft repeated, but false, claim that "Recent statistics show domestic family violence claims more Australian women’s lives and causes more ill health than all other well-known preventable risks."<br /><br /> Obviously this isn't the case. About 100 women a year in Australia are killed by their intimate partners (i.e. via domestic violence). Of these about 90% occur amongst an unemployed underclass.<br /><br /> In Australia women are 1 in every 3 of those who commit suicide. That means that about 830 women will commit suicide in Australia each year. Women are 60% of those who attempt suicide, which means that 36,000 women will attempt suicide.<br /><br /> So what is the greatest risk to women? It is not harm by a male partner, but self-harm. Women are 8 times more likely to be killed by self-harm than by domestic violence and 360 times more likely to attempt self-harm than to be killed by an intimate partner.<br /><br /> Of course it is a worthy aim nonetheless to try to reduce the number of deaths by domestic violence. It is a pity, though, that the issue should be framed as one of men oppressing women. The <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/jun/07/feminism-domestic-violence-men">statistics</a> are that 50% of those assaulted in domestic violence cases are male; 30% of those injured are male; and 25% of those killed are male. In 2010 28 men were killed in Australia by female partners.<br /><br /> So women are the majority of victims but men make up a substantial minority. So why focus on women alone as victims?<br /><br /> The answer is that it fits into a certain ideology. According to patriarchy theory, men use violence against women in a systematic way in order to uphold a gender supremacy. The theory claims that masculinity itself was created on the basis of this violent suppression of women. Logically, if you believe the ideology, you will think that the solution to domestic violence lies with all men changing their attitudes toward women and abandoning masculinity and privilege.<br /><br /> We should be encouraging those participating in domestic violence campaigns to drop the ideological approach in favour of a more practical outlook. And a test of this is whether the campaigners are willing to see domestic violence in general as a problem, and not reduce it to a male oppressor/female victim scenario.<br /><br /> There does exist a group attempting to influence the debate called <a href="http://www.oneinthree.com.au/">One in Three</a>. I especially like their page dealing with <a href="http://www.oneinthree.com.au/misinformation/">misleading statistics</a>.

As it happens, <a href="http://www.patheos.com/blogs/secularoutpost/2015/10/05/an-example-of-why-atheists-need-to-do-effective-counter-apologetics-and-an-example-of-how-not-to-do-that/">Jeff has now commented</a> on my exchange with Coyne. Urging his fellow atheists not to follow Coyne’s example, Jeff writes:</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><i><span style="line-height: 115%;">If I were to sum up Feser’s reply in one word, it would be, “Ouch!” I think Feser’s reply is simply devastating to Coyne and I found myself in agreement with most of his points. </span></i></span><br /><a name="more"></a></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">As Jeff also writes:</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><i><span style="line-height: 115%;">It shouldn’t come as a surprise, however, that often the same atheists who are so dismissive of theism tend to use such awful arguments and objections against it. In a sense, this is understandable. If you’ve concluded that belief X is not only false but stupid or even irrational, then you’re unlikely to spend much if any time trying to understand the best arguments for X. </span></i></span><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"> </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Now, the irony of this situation is that in every attempt to <i>justify</i> their dismissive attitude toward theism, New Atheists like Coyne, Krauss, Dawkins and myriad others only ever succeed in demonstrating conclusively that that dismissive attitude is <i>un</i>justified. For you cannot rationally reject a position, dismissively or not, unless you first understand what it <i>is</i>. And every time they open their mouths, these New Atheists show that they very badly misunderstand the central claims of, and arguments for, theism. Indeed, it is amazing how the very <i>same</i> crude misunderstandings recur again and again <i>and again</i>, even after they have been patiently, clearly, and repeatedly explained.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Consider, for example, that Coyne and I first had an exchange on the subject of cosmological arguments for God’s existence <a href="http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2011/07/clue-for-jerry-coyne.html">over four years ago</a>. Coyne claimed at the time that he really wanted to know what the best arguments for theism are, and insisted that he was “dead serious here, and not looking for sarcastic answers.” I recommended that he study the arguments of Aquinas, with the help of some serious commentators who could explain the metaphysical background to the arguments. (Unsurprisingly, I recommended my own book <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Aquinas-Beginners-Guide-Guides/dp/1851686908/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252816324&sr=1-4">Aquinas</a></i>, though I also cited some other authors.) <a href="http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2011/07/tom-and-jerry.html">Coyne said he would do so</a>. Very soon thereafter I posted <a href="http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2011/07/so-you-think-you-understand.html">an article explaining in detail</a> the various common misunderstandings of cosmological arguments, including the versions of the argument presented by Aquinas. I explained, for example, why the argument does <i>not</i> rest on the premise that “everything has a cause”; why, accordingly, the argument does <i>not</i> make of God some arbitrary exception to a general rule; why the argument nevertheless does <i>not</i> make of God a brute fact who just exists without any explanation (since not all explanations are causes); why versions of the argument like the ones defended by Aquinas and Leibniz (and by me, for that matter) are <i>not </i>concerned to show that the universe had a beginning; and so forth. <a href="https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2011/07/23/rosenhouse-on-feser-on-the-cosmological-argument/">Coyne commented on that article</a>. In the course of doing so, he accused me of “intellectual dishonesty” -- on utterly preposterous grounds, <a href="http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2011/07/grow-up-or-shut-up.html">as I showed here</a>. But if Coyne himself is as intellectually honest as he would like us to think, he presumably <i>read</i> the article before commenting on it. In which case he would know that the kind of cosmological arguments I defend do not argue for a temporal beginning of the universe, do not rest on the premise that “everything has a cause,” do not make of God a brute fact who just exists without explanation, etc.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Flash forward four years to our current exchange. As I noted in <a href="http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2015/10/why-cant-these-guys-stay-on-topic-or.html">my recent response to Coyne</a>, despite all the back and forth of four years ago, despite his purportedly “dead serious” intention to find out what the best arguments really say, despite his commitment to study Aquinas in particular -- despite<i> all that</i>, he <i>still</i> falsely attributes to me a version of the cosmological argument that “insist[s] that that world had to have a beginning,” and <i>still</i> falsely attributes to me the thesis that God is “just there” without explanation! </span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">But it is worse even than that. Even after my recent response to Coyne appeared, <a href="https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2015/10/04/feser-to-krauss-shut-up-because-of-the-uncaused-cause/#comment-1245440">he posted a further comment</a> in his combox <i>still</i>asserting -- wait for it -- that my “main argument… is that everything has a ‘cause’” and that I “rely on everything having a cause -- except God” (!) And he said this <i>in reply to an atheist reader who complained about atheists like Coyne misrepresenting what theists really say!</i></span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Could it get worse even than <i>that</i>? Well, on Jerry Coyne’s blog it sure can, and it does. In <a href="https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2015/10/07/jesus-n-mo-n-the-uncaused-cause/">yet another post</a> two days later, Coyne claimed that the cosmological argument’s answer to the question “Why does God exist?” is: “He just does,” without explanation (!) This despite the fact that -- as I explained in my response to him just days before (and as I explained in my exchange with him four years ago) -- that is <i>precisely the opposite</i> of what Aristotelian, Thomist, Leibnizian, and other defenders of the argument actually say! And when a reader pointed out in Coyne’s combox that this is a caricature of the argument, <a href="https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2015/10/07/jesus-n-mo-n-the-uncaused-cause/#comment-1246826">Coyne banned him from posting any further</a> (purportedly on the grounds that the reader was being rude)!</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Needless to say, there is something truly pathological going on here. And that, by the way, is one reason Coyne, Krauss, and company are worth at least a little of our attention. Some readers have asked me why I bother replying to people who are so extremely irrational and dishonest, and therefore unlikely to respond well to serious criticism. Part of the reason is that though Coyne, Krauss, Dawkins, and many of their fans are indeed impervious to rational argumentation, there are onlookers who are <i>not</i> impervious to it. And those people are reachable and worth trying to reach. After all, Coyne, Krauss, Dawkins, and some of the other better known New Atheists are, though irrational and dishonest, not <i>stupid</i>. In their own fields, some of them even do interesting work. For that reason, some people who know as little about philosophy and theology as they do but who are rational and honest might falsely suppose that these New Atheists must have <i>something</i> important to say about those particular subjects. Hence it is useful now and again to expose Coyne et al. for the frauds that they are, so that well-meaning third parties will see that they are not to be taken seriously on philosophical and theological questions. The more they make fools of themselves, the more they <i>should</i>be discussed rather than ignored, at least so long as there is any intellectually honest person who still somehow thinks the New Atheism is anything but a bad joke.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Another reason for paying them some attention, though, is that Coyne, Krauss, Dawkins, and company are simply genuine curiosities. Again, they are not stupid, and indeed have serious intellectual accomplishments to their credit. And yet on the subjects of religion and philosophy they are incapable of seeing that their self-confidence is laughably, cringe-makingly out of proportion to their actual competence. They exhibit <i>exactly</i> the sort of stubborn, bigoted closed-mindedness and ignorance that they smugly condemn when they perceive it in others. What exactly is going on here? What makes these weird people tick? That is a question of real intellectual interest.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">The answer, I would suggest, is <i>sentimentality</i>. I use the word in a semi-technical sense, following the analysis offered in <i>The Aesthetics of Music</i> by Roger Scruton (who was in turn building on some ideas of Michael Tanner). A sentimental person, according to Scruton, tends to be quick to respond emotionally to a stimulus, will appear to be pained but will enjoy his pangs, will respond with equal violence to a variety of stimuli in succession, will nevertheless avoid following his emotional responses up with appropriate actions, and will respond more readily to strangers and to abstract issues than to persons known to him or to concrete circumstances requiring time, energy, or personal sacrifice. In short, a sentimental person is one whose emotional life becomes an end in itself and loses its connection both to the external circumstances that would normally shape it and to the behavior that it ought to generate. Feelings of moral outrage, romantic passion, and other emotional states become valued for their own sake to such an extent that the actual moral facts, the well-being of the beloved, etc. fade into the background. </span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">For instance, someone who constantly chats up the plight of the homeless, but without any real interest in finding out why people become homeless or what ways of helping them are really effective, might plausibly be described as merely sentimental. “How awful things are for the homeless!” is not really the thought that moves him. What really moves him is the thought: “How <i>wonderful I am</i> to think of how awful things are for the homeless!” His feelings of compassion function, not to get him to do what is necessary to help those who are homeless, but rather to provide him with assurance of his superior virtue. His high dudgeon functions, not to prod him to find out whether the homeless are really being victimized by evildoers, but rather to reinforce his assurance of his superior virtue by allowing him to contrast himself with the imagined evildoers. This kind of onanistic moralism requires a fantasy world rich enough to sustain it. Poignant or dramatic images of suffering and of injustices inflicted are far more likely to foster such fantasies than are cold statistics or the actual, mundane details of the lives of homeless people. Hence someone who is merely sentimental about homelessness might prefer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fisher_King">movies</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_Day_in_Paradise">songs</a>, and the like to social scientific study as a source of “information” about homelessness and its causes.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Now, the New Atheism, I submit, is exactly like this. The New Atheist <i>talks</i>, constantly and loudly, about reason, science, evidence, facts, being “reality-based,” etc. Equally constantly and loudly, he decries dogmatism, ignorance, wishful thinking, whatever is merely “faith-based,” etc. And he relentlessly denounces “religious” people, whom, he imagines, are central casting exemplars of the latter vices. But it is not reason, science, etc. that really move him. What really moves him is the <i>pleasure</i> that the <i>thought </i>of being paradigmatically rational, scientific, etc. gives him. Nor is he really moved by what religious people actually think. After all, he not only doesn’t trouble himself to find out what they actually think, but often will expend great energy trying to rationalize his <i>refusal</i>to find out what they actually think. (Consider e.g. P.Z. Myers’ shamelessly question-begging <a href="https://www.aei.org/publication/the-new-philistinism/">“Courtier’s reply” dodge</a>.) Rather, what moves him is the self-righteous <i>delight</i> he takes in his <i>belief</i> in his intellectual and moral superiority over “religious” people. His “rationalism” consists, not in actually <i>being</i> rational, but in constantly <i>chatting up</i> rationality and constantly badmouthing those who, at least in his imagination, are not as rational as he <i>enjoys believing</i> that <i>he</i>is.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Here too, we have a kind of moralistic onanism which requires a rich fantasy life to support it. Finding out what thinkers like Aquinas, Leibniz, et al. <i>actually said</i>would completely destroy the fantasy, because they simply don’t fit the New Atheist’s caricature of religion. Hence the New Atheist nourishes his imagination instead with <i>made-up examples</i> of purportedly theistic ideas and argumentation, which he typically derives from reading other New Atheist writers rather than by reading what religious thinkers themselves have written. He repeatedly calls these examples to mind when he wants to reassure himself of the stupidity of religious people and of his superiority over them -- <i>especially</i>when he encounters some religious opponent who doesn’t seem to fit his stereotype. He thinks: <i>“First cause arguments start from the premise that ‘everything has a cause’; all such arguments founder on their inability to answer the challenge ‘What caused God?’; theism is incompatible with science, or at least presupposes outdated science; theism always ultimately rests on appeals to faith, or the Bible, or emotion…” </i>and so forth<i>. </i>None of this is true, and it is all easily refuted simply by consulting the actual writings of religious thinkers. But the New Atheist is able to keep himself from seeing this by <i>translating</i> everything an opponent says into something he pulls from his mental bag of clichés about “what theists think.”</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Hence, in response to my recent articles about Krauss and Coyne, we have Coyne saying the Bizarro-world things cited above. We have <a href="http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2015/09/all-scientists-should-beg-lawrence.html?showComment=1443621965177#c7618752457756228930">an irate Krauss fan asking</a>: “Why do you believe in God? Because the Bible told you to, right?” We have <a href="http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2015/10/why-cant-these-guys-stay-on-topic-or.html?showComment=1444011042528#c4532395561383651140">one of Coyne’s readers saying</a>: “I'll admit I haven't read your entire response to Jerry here” -- and then going on nevertheless to attribute to me outdated scientific ideas I not only have never endorsed, but have many times explicitly rejected. We have <a href="https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2015/10/04/feser-to-krauss-shut-up-because-of-the-uncaused-cause/#comment-1245805">other Coyne readers</a> simply refusing to get over their fixation on the stupid “Everything has a cause” argument that no philosopher or theologian has ever defended, even in the face of other, more sober atheist readers’ begging them to stop attacking this straw man. We have Krauss, in <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/all-scientists-should-be-militant-atheists">the <i>New Yorker</i> article</a> to which I replied <a href="http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2015/09/15760/">in <i>Public Discourse</i></a>, deluding himself into thinking that it is his impoliteness, rather than his incompetence, that prompts other atheists to criticize him. We have the breathtaking chutzpah of <a href="http://www.patheos.com/blogs/secularoutpost/2015/09/14/jerry-coyne-on-atheists-criticizing-other-atheists/">Coyne accusing</a>, not just critics of the New Atheism, but even <i>atheist</i> critics of the New Atheism, of “distortion” of the New Atheists’ views.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br /><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">It is as if these people are so lost in their delusions that they <i>literally cannot see what is really there on the page or the computer screen in front of them</i>. All they can see is the New Atheist Fantasyland they’ve constructed, where every ticket is a scarlet-A-for-atheist ticket, and Coyne and Co. keep going on the same rides over and over and over again. The New Atheists like to think that they win every argument, and indeed they do, though only in the way <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Mitty">Walter Mitty</a> wins every battle.</span></span></div>
